Gem Valley NC mine is a family owned and operated lapidary business and one of North Carolina’s newest attractions as it is the only public gem mining facility in the beautiful mountain of Ashe County, NC.

The Gem Valley NC mine is located near the historical Civil War mining community of Ore Knob. Copper mining started there in the late 1800’s, with Ore Knob being a very well known mine. Also mined from the Ore Knob were other valuable minerals such as gold which can still be found at Gem Valley today. In addition to gold numerous valuable stones including garnets, emeralds and fossils can be found offering the inexperienced, as well as experienced, rock lover the chance to discover some of Ashe County’s hidden treasures for themselves.

Gem Valley has covered mining flumes, a gemstone/rock supply shop and gift shop with a local rock museum. There are also recreational picnic areas on the property for you and your family to enjoy. So make sure to bring your picnic lunch and camera when you visit as the views are amazing along with the memories.

Located between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the New River; Gem Valley NC is located on Little Peak Creek Road off of highway 88 East in between Jefferson and Laurel Springs. The price is $10 per person for access to the flumes and mining for the entire day along with a complimentary bucket of gem/dirt.
